A Version of the 23rd Psalm

This comes from one of our young people, written as an activity in Sunday School recently:

God, you are our guide.

You nourish our souls

with the riches of your love.

You lead us through your many lands,

        pointing us on our way,

        beginning our journey.

- Claire B.

A Note From Kristen

Here’s a quick run down of upcoming plans for the youth group:

January 29 youth are encouraged to come to the annual meeting at church (right after the 10:30 service), and then we'll have a little check in afterwards.

February 5 - Normal youth group at 6:30

February 12Baking and delivering cookies to folks who have bought them for Valentine’s Day. (Sign up sheet at church starting January 29).

February 18 (Saturday) - Lock-in. I know, normally we would do this on a Friday, but we’re doing a pancake breakfast on the 19th, between the worship services, so... come to the lock-in, and plan to get up early (!) to make pancakes.

 February 26th - normal 6:30 youth group

March 4Youth group after the 10:30 worship service (this is a great opportunity for all you youth to come to church!)

March 10 (Saturday) – We’re planning to host a movie night for other youth groups in the area. More details to follow.

 March 11 - 6:30 youth group

 March 18 - 6:30 youth group

 March 25 - 6:30 youth group

That's as far as we got with the schedule so far. All youth, ages 11 and older, are invited to come and be a part of things. For more information, you can e-mail Kristen at kristen.almgren@gmail.com or text her at 425-238-2038.

Possibly coming up in the future: the youth leader from Mercer Island UCC (Susan Moon) has asked if we would be interested in coming out to their church to play broom ball (it's like hockey that you play on wood floors in your socks with brooms! It's amazing!!) More information to come once we work out the details.

See you at youth group!

Kristen Almgren,

Youth leader

Admiral Welcomes New Youth Leader

The church council is pleased to announce that, after much discussion we have hired a part-time youth leader. Kristen Almgren will begin in this role on October 1, and the next day at the 10:30 worship service we will have a chance to welcome her to our congregation (and visit with her after church).

The process involved the council exploring some of the ramifications, pros, and cons of the position, and then charging the Personnel Team to formulate a job description, advertise, and interview. A team of Pastor Donald, Chad Crooks, Abbey Follansbee, Laura Sutkus (on behalf of personnel) and Don Osmer (on behalf of Christian education) met with Kristen and were immediately impressed. We recommended her unanimously to the council, who met with her, asked some more questions, and enthusiastically hired her to complement the work of our congregation.

Kristen grew up in the United Church of Christ, and has worked as a volunteer youth leader at University Congregational. In addition, she has worked at Pilgrim Firs Camp for several years, and thus knows many of our youth from summers there. She will be a great addition to the vibrant life of our church.

Youth Group

One of the things I like best about
the Admiral UCC youth group are the
flamingo flockings. I think the flockings
are a lot like our youth group:
fun, spontaneous and totally random.
It’s really funny when you go
knock on the door and they don’t
know what the heck all these flamingos
are doing in their yard! After I’m
done flocking all I can do is smile,
thinking about the look of utter
shock on the person’s face when
they saw all the bright pink birds
scattered in their yard. I think the
flamingo flockings are fun, easy and
a great fundraiser too! Who wouldn’t
want to pull a harmless prank and
flock a neighbor’s yard?

Why I Like Admiral Choir

This fall, I joined Admiral Choir and
here is why it fulfils me. Keith does a
wonderful job playing piano. The elegant
pieces he composes add a wondrous
element to our singing. He inspires me
to work harder by giving creative feedback.
I get a new perspective on singing
because I persevere and make an effort
to get better.
Everyone there is friendly and I enjoy
singing with them. They always give
you a warm welcome and a radiant
smile. When I sing with them, I always
feel joyful.
I go to rehearsal with my mom and
sister. When we first get to choir, we
get to listen to the soundtrack of our
complex anthem from the previous
Sunday. We chat about what we could
improve on and what we did well. I
think most of the time I could do better
and then I try harder.
At the end of our practices, we pray
and peacefully thank God for our gifts
and blessings.
- Lily T.

Singing

Wondrous, peaceful, creative
The sound of our voices
Complex and joyful
The language of beauty
Abundant with new life
This is the voice of our God
